Qualcomm has today upgraded its highest end chipset available in the 600 series. With the new Snapdragon 670, the company aims to make it easier for phone makers to offer better and more reliable AI features at affordable costs. However, the Snapdragon 670 is also awfully similar to 710 as both of them have an eight-core Kryo 360 CPU, the same Hexagon 685 DSP, Spectra 250 ISP, and more. So what is different? Turns out a lot if we dive deeper into the fine print.
Higher Clock Speeds
The Snapdragon 710â€™s performance cores have marginally higher clock speeds than the ones present on the 670. They can reach a maximum of 2.2Ghz compared to 2.0Ghz on the latter. The six efficiency cores, though, seem identical at 1.7Ghz in either case.
Another minor performance advantage the Snapdragon 710 has is the Adreno 616. The new Snapdragon 670, on the other hand, comes with the Adreno 615 GPU. Itâ€™s not a significant difference, of course, but itâ€™s clear how the chip maker has cut costs.
While the Image Signal Processor is identical on both the chipsets, they differ in lens compatibility. The Snapdragon 710 can power a sensor of up to 32-megapixels and 20-megapixels if theyâ€™re two of them. The Snapdragon 670 has a limit of 25-megapixels for single setup and 16-megapixel in dual ones.
Another key difference between the Snapdragon 710 and 670 is the fact that the former can run screens with a Quad HD+ resolution. The latter, on the other hand, is restricted to Full HD+.
While both the chipsets have Qualcommâ€™s Aqstic Audio codec for better recording, the Snapdragon 670 misses out on AptX for richer outputs through headphones. The absence of AptX will only matter as long as youâ€™re someone who streams music at the highest quality.
The Snapdragon 710 also features a superior modem, the X15 against the 670â€™s X12. Both have the same upload rates but the maximum download bandwidth is 200Mbps more (800Mbps vs 600Mbps) on the X15. While you probably wonâ€™t ever notice the bandwidth differences, phones with the X15 will be theoretically able to retain WiFi or cellular connections better than the X12.
Phones running the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 and 710 should be available in the next few months.
