In the Greek language, the word chilioi is used for thousand. Which is further pronounced as Kilioi. But with changing times people started calling it Kilo. This is because of the change in accent. Like earlier, it was called Bombay, but no it is pronounced as Mumbai.

Kilo is used a prefix before gram, meters, etc. Kilo means thousand. That is why k is said to be the prefix of thousand.
